Position Description

The purpose of the Academic Advising Center within the University College is to support students who are exploring majors or transitioning between majors. Academic Advisors are responsible for assisting students in academic exploration, registration, navigating academic policies, and providing connections to on-campus resources. Using a developmental advising model, Academic Advisors support the development of knowledge, skills, and personal accountability needed to explore academic and co-curricular options.

The Associate Director delivers holistic, inclusive, developmental, and student-centered academic advising to undergraduate students in the University College, provides direct supervision for all tier 1 Academic Advisors, and is the primary contact/coordinator of the Advisor Institute for Professional Development. The Associate Director plays a critical role in the educational journey of the undeclared student as well as supporting and training team members. The Associate Directors works with a team of Advisor to support students with identifying interests, abilities, academic goals, and important decisions regarding their academic career.

As an Associate Director, the responsibilities include supporting undeclared and transitioning students in identifying their academic strengths and establishing plans of study based upon degree requirements and the student’s academic and career goals. They will assist in identifying struggling and/or at-risk students; make appropriate referrals to on-campus resources; provide assistance with registration, add/drop, and withdrawal; and major declaration. They are responsible for maintaining detailed student records; participating in recruitment and retention initiatives; first-year and transfer orientations; departmental and committee meetings; and developing relationships with campus partners.

The Associate Director will directly supervise all tier 1 academic advisors; implement advising initiatives for University College students; assist with providing content for the various first-year seminar courses; and coordinate and provide all training and onboarding for all new academic advisors within the University College.

In addition to the advising and supervision responsibilities, the Associate Director is the primary contact/coordinator of the Advisor Institute for Professional Development. These responsibilities include, but not limited to, developing and implementing an academic advisor professional development programs for all primary and secondary advisors within the University.
